Sabers help Eagles clinch tie for first in division

Mountain View spent a few hours in first place Saturday before Susquehanna knocked the Eagles back off that perch.

What the Sabers took away, however, they gave back.

Susquehanna knocked Lackawanna Trail out of the lead Tuesday night and Mountain View took advantage this time, clinching at least a tie for first place with a 45-41 win at Forest City.

The Eagles used big second halves from Ryan Henke and Michael Fanelli to rally from a halftime deficit and overcome Forest City’s upset bid.

Henke had 14 of his 16 points and Fanelli had 12 of his 15 during the second half.

Fanelli made seven of eight free throws and Wyatt Brozonis made all four of his during the fourth quarter.

The win put Mountain View in position where it only needs to defeat last place Montrose at home Thursday night to win the division championship.

The Eagles lost out on a title last season in a playoff game with Susquehanna.

Mountain View started this season 0-5 and 2-8, but has won eight out of 10 since.

Susquehanna 50, Lackawanna Trail 38

Lackawanna Trail entered the game with a chance to clinch at least a tie for first place.

Garrett Decker scored 13 points while Jakub Tomczyk and Spencer Beamer had 11 each to make sure that did not happen.

Beamer scored all of his points in the fourth quarter when he was 9-for-13 from the foul line.

Susquehanna had won the last two Lackawanna Division 4 titles before graduating its entire starting lineup and beginning this season 0-6 and 1-8.

The Sabers have come back strong from that rough start. They are 7-4 in the division and 8-13 overall with one game to go and will finish third in the division, either alone or as part of a tie.

Nico Berrios had 17 points to lead Lackawanna Trail.

The Lions finished 9-3 in the division. They are 13-8 overall with a non-league game left against Mid Valley.

Elk Lake 66, Montrose 46

Elk Lake won on the road in the Lackawanna Division game.

Blue Ridge 63, Carbondale 57

Blue Ridge opened a 31-15 halftime lead to win at Carbondale in the crossover game that is not part of the Lackawanna League standings.
