GAR enters the start of Wyoming Valley Conference Division 3 girls basketball play having already exceeded its win total for all of the 2017-18 season.
The Lady Grenadiers won just twice in 22 games last season, picking up both victories over winless division rival MMI Prep.
With only two seniors and no juniors on the roster entering the final year before the program merges with Coughlin and Meyers into the new Wilkes-Barre Area team, a major change was not readily apparent.
GAR, however, upset WVC Division 1 member Pittston Area on Opening Night and enters the conference schedule on a two-game winning streak for a 3-2 overall record.
Point guard Olivia Prato, the second-leading scorer a year ago, is one of the two seniors. The other, small forward Lyann Pena, also has some playing experience.
Hannah Cook, a point guard, and Emily Engle, a forward, put the experience they gained last year as freshmen to use and have been more effective.
Freshman center Gloria Adjayi has made an immediate impact.
After missing the postseason a year ago, the Lady Grenadiers have provided signs that they could at least contend to make the top eight – out of 12 – District 2 Class 4A teams that get to extend their season.
