The first Wyoming Valley Conference basketball playoffs will be held in three doubleheaders February 12, 13 and 15.
School gyms will be used for the playoffs, according to WVC basketball executive secretary Charlie Turco, the Pittston Area athletic director. That leaves open the possibility of a team playing on its home floor.
The order of the semifinal doubleheaders has not been set. Those games will be played on Feb. 12 and 13 at Dallas and Holy Redeemer.
The championship doubleheader will be played at Hazleton Area Feb. 15.
WVC officials instituted the basketball playoffs for this season.
There will be four-team tournaments in boys and girls, each involving the three division champions and a wild card. The wild card will be decided with the playoff rating system being used by District 2.
If the boys playoffs started today, Crestwood, Nanticoke and Wyoming Seminary would be in as the top teams in their divisions and Holy Redeemer would be the wild card.
The current girls leaders are Hazleton Area, Holy Redeemer and Wyoming Seminary and Nanticoke leads the wild-card race. Holy Redeemer is the defending Division 2 champion and is hosting this year's girls semifinals.
Hazleton Area could get a home championship game by advancing to the final. Its boys team remains in playoff contention.
The Hazleton Area girls are the closest to securing a spot. They have already clinched at least a tie for first place in Division 1 with five games to play.
