Invaders relying heavily on sophomores

Sophomore Cayden Merrifield has developed into a high-scoring point guard on a revamped West Scranton boys basketball team.

Merrifield is the only healthy returning starter for the Invaders, who went 4-4 in non-league play in preparation for Wednesday’s opening to the Lackawanna League season.

Jalen Gregory, the team’s 6-foot-5 senior center, has not played this season because of injury.

As a result, a young lineup got even younger.

Sophomores Payton Davis and Nick Forsette gained a bit of experience last season.

Forward Brandon Barnes, another sophomore, is one of the top newcomers. Junior Lewin Fernandez has also made an impact early in the season.

Senior Nick Gioia saw limited playing time two years ago before being hurt last season.

West Scranton is trying to improve on finishing last in Division 1 last season with a 3-10 record. The Invaders went 8-15 overall.
