Kreitzer, Johnson lead teams in points, assists

Nate Kreitzer has made more 3-pointers than anyone in a Nanticoke basketball history that has included more than its share of talented sharpshooters.

Kreitzer took the school career record for 3s away from his coach, John Beggs.

“He has 1,200-some points and also has over 200 3s,” Beggs said. “He broke that record. I had the old one and he’s gone way past that.

“Hopefully, we still have plenty of games to go, so his records will hold for a long time.”

Few players in District 2 have put up numbers at a faster pace than Kreitzer, a returning all-state player who was also NEPABasketball.com's Player of the Year in his division last season.

One is GAR’s Will Johnson, who Kreitzer will face tonight.

Their battle within the showdown for first place in Division 2 of the Wyoming Valley Conference is the Maddock Insurance Agency Marquee Matchup of the Game for tonight’s NEPABasketball.com/WQMY TV broadcast at 7.

GAR and Nanticoke go into the game with 10-4 WVC records, tied for the Division 2 lead.

Johnson has about 1,600 points for his career.

Both will handle the ball for their teams, running the offense before scoring the points.

While Kreitzer fires away with more than three 3-pointers per game while leading the team with 18.7 points and 3.8 assists, Johnson gets the bulk of his points in another way.

Johnson works his way into the lane repeatedly on drives, then scores or distributes from there. He also hits a little more than two 3-pointers per game, like Kreitzer, leading the team in that category and assists as well as points.

With more than 27 points per game, Johnson is District 2’s runaway scoring leader.

“He’s scoring a lot of points, but it’s not because he’s just chucking up shots,” GAR coach Jerry Altavilla said. “They’re all pretty high-percentage shots.”

When he’s not open beyond the arc, Kreitzer also drives. He converts more than 76 percent of his free throws when he gets to the line.

Monitoring the progress of Kreitzer and Johnson in the Maddock Insurance Agency Marquee Matchup of the Game will be one of the features of tonight’s broadcast.
