Notes

  • Carbondale set a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association boys basketball record with 59 straight wins, going perfect in 2002-03 and taking a 29-0 record into the 2004 state final.
  • The only longer streaks in Pennsylvania were 68 by West Philadelphia in 1976-78 when it was not yet a PIAA member; 61 by Chester to break Carbondale’s PIAA record in 2012; and 61 by Allentown before its 1946 and 1947 state titles were vacated for using ineligible players and the wins were wiped out by forfeit.
  • Carbondale pulled off what is regarded as one of the biggest championship game upsets in PIAA history when it defeated George Jr. Republic, 65-63, on Leo Skorupa’s scoop shot at the final buzzer off a long rebound in the 1993 state championship game.
  • When Carbondale and George Jr. Republic matched 29-0 records in the 1994 state Class 2A final, it was the only time in PIAA basketball history that two teams with 29-0 or better records met.
  • The Chargers took their unbeaten record back to the 1994 state Class 2A final where they lost to Aliquippa, 60-57.
  • The last time Carbondale reached the state tournament was 2004 when it advanced to the second round.
  • Carbondale is 17-10 in 11 state tournament appearances, including 16-11 since 1981.
  • The Chargers five state appearances since 1989 and 1996.
  • The last time Carbondale beat anyone other than Wyoming Seminary in the district playoffs was the first round of the 2008 Class 2A tournament when it defeated fifth-seeded Lackawanna Trail as the 12th seed, 62-48.
  • Carbondale went 1-2 in the Lackawanna League playoffs to qualify and earn seeds for the District 2 Class 2A tournament. The Chargers were 1-1 in 2011 and 0-1 in 2012, falling short of making the district tournament both times.
