WILKES-BARRE TWP. – Leo O’Boyle arrived at a personal milestone while he was securing the extension of a team streak.

O’Boyle scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half to rally the Cavaliers to their fifth straight District 2 boys basketball championship with a 47-41 victory over Nanticoke in the Class 4A final Saturday afternoon at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

The 6-foot-8 senior forward reached the 1,000-point mark for his career while clinching the win with two free throws for the game’s final points with 13.8 seconds left.

“This team is special to me,” said O’Boyle, who missed nearly half the regular season with a broken foot. “I’ve been out a lot and I wasn’t sure if I was going to get my 1,000th.

“I didn’t even know I it until the buzzer went off, which is even better.”

O’Boyle scored eight of his points in the final 6:47 after Nanticoke took its last lead to begin the fourth quarter.

When he was not scoring, he was setting up his teammates. O’Boyle assisted on the only three Scranton Prep fourth-quarter baskets that he did not score.

O’Boyle and Mario Rotell each went 4-for-4 from the line in the fourth quarter.

Rotell scored 6 of his 12 points in the fourth quarter.

Before O’Boyle got going offensively, it was Rotell’s defense that helped keep Scranton Prep in the game.

Nanticoke hit four 3-pointers in the first 9:05 to take an 18-6 lead.

The Trojans scored 12 straight points, including 3-pointers by Jake Krupinski and Colby Butczynski to end the first quarter and again by Jake Krupinski to start the second quarter and build the game’s biggest lead.

Rotell’s hustle helped him come up with five steals, all in the first half, and keep the Cavaliers within 23-16 at halftime.

The Scranton Prep increased defensive pressure forced seven turnovers in the third quarter while holding Nanticoke to six points, allowing the Cavaliers to tie the game going into the fourth quarter.

“I thought we did a great job on the defensive end,” Rotell said.

The Cavaliers did not allow another 3-pointer after Jake Krupinski made his second to start the second quarter.

Jake Krupinski finished 5-for-7 from the floor to lead Nanticoke with 13 points.

Nate Kreitzer added 10 points and 3 steals.

Trahjan Krupinski grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

O’Boyle added eight rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocked shots to scoring effort.

Scranton Prep (22-3) continues into the state tournament where it opens March 8 against Susquehanna Township at Lackawanna College at 7:30. The fourth-place team from District 3 is 13-13.

Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 champion Nanticoke (21-7) plays District 4 third-place finisher Montoursville (19-8) March 8 at Wilkes University at 7:30.
