Looking for Cayden Merrifield when West Scranton is on offense tonight? There’s a simple tip to follow.
Locate the basketball.
If Merrifield does not have it already, he’s likely to have it soon.
The sophomore runs the Invaders offense as point guard and he leads the team in scoring with more than 18 points per game.
Merrifield starts most plays in the structured West Scranton offense. The Astra Wealth Advisors Spotlight Player of the Game finishes many of them, too.
And, when the Invaders run through a play without getting the shot they desire, they don’t hesitate to get the ball back to Merrifield out front and start all over again.
Merrifield is coming off a 32-point game in Wednesday’s Lackawanna League opener, leading the Invaders to a 72-61 road win over North Pocono.
The three-sport athlete is used to being in the spotlight.
Merrifield as starting as shortstop and leadoff hitter on the baseball team since the beginning of his freshman season. He ran the point on basketball last season as a freshman, although, at the time, less plays were designed for him to both start and finish. In football, he started every game this fall at cornerback and took over as the starting quarterback when needed because of injury.
The same Invaders teammates that Merrifield will look to pass to get involved in the West Scranton offense will help free him up with a series of high screens designed to give him space to operate.
