MMI Prep boys claim District 2 gold medals

By TOM ROBINSON, NEPABasketball.com

WILKES-BARRE TWP. – Susquehanna has the subregional championship and the state tournament berth, but MMI Prep left Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza and ended its season with gold medals.

Matt Marchetti scored 12 points while Marcus Kassick added 11 points and 7 rebounds to lead the Preppers to a 38-22 rout of the Sabers in Sunday afternoon’s District 2 Class A championship game.

MMI Prep was a different team with Phillip Byriel, who had missed 16 games this season with a broken left wrist.

Susquehanna was also a different team without junior point guard and leading scorer Mason Deakin, who coach Lawrence Tompkins said did not play because “right now, he is in violation of school and team academic policies.”

Deakin had scored 31 points Thursday night when the Sabers defeated Pottsville Nativity BVM, 65-59, in the District 2-11 Class A Subregional final at Scranton High.

Byriel, a 6-foot-8 sophomore forward/center, played his second game since the injury nearly two months ago. He finished with six points, eight rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots.

MMI Prep coach Joe Flanagan credited Byriel’s defense with altering additional shots on a day when Susquehanna’s offense went through some extreme struggles while shooting 24.2 percent.

“He just did a good job, as did our whole team, of challenging their shooters,” Flanagan said.

The Sabers led, 8-2, early, then suffered through a 15:27 scoreless drought that capped a longer stretch in which they were outscored, 26-4, for nearly 22 minutes.

“I still thought that defensively we did a good job,” Tompkins said. “We just could not put the ball in the basket and that’s a credit to MMI.”

Adam Rockwell led Susquehanna with 10 points and hit the 3-pointer with 5:35 left after MMI Prep had taken a 28-12 lead.

Bryce Baldwin added 6 points and 11 rebounds for the Sabers.

MMI Prep, which did not qualify to participate in the District 2-12 tournament, finished its season at 7-16.

Susquehanna (17-9) continues into state play where it will open Friday night against Conestoga Christian at a District 2 site.
