Spartans will need some help for Ruff

Draig Ruff is one of the most dynamic players returning to Division 1 of Wyoming Valley Conference boys basketball this season, but he is the only returning starter back for Wyoming Valley West.

“We’re going to go as far as he can take us,” coach Rich Jones said at Sunday’s WVC Media Night.

The 6-foot-1 senior forward averaged about 15 points per game last season to lead a high-scoring team.

The Spartans may have a bit of a different look with a physical presence provided by two standout defensive linemen on the school’s District 2 Class 5A championship football team.

Senior Cortes Adams and sophomore Sammy Solomon give the team a pair of 6-3 centers/forwards, who could be in the lineup together.

“We’ve got some size with our football players,” Jones.

Sophomore Isaac Sosa and freshman Mason Mendygral are likely to form the starting backcourt.

“We’re young and unproven,” said Jones, who still expects quickness to be a strength for the team.

The Spartans finished third in the division a year ago at 9-7. They went 12-11 overall, falling to division rival Dallas in the quarterfinals of the District 2 Class 5A tournament.
