Invaders will have to grow on the fly

With clutch play from a veteran team down the stretch, West Scranton ended the 2016-17 season in the state Class 5A boys basketball playoffs where it battled before elimination in a one-point game against Spring Grove.

The Invaders will have a decidedly different look in 2017-18.

“Very young” is the way veteran coach Jack Lyons describes his team.

Lyons has won 555 games, including 179 in 15 seasons as head coach of the Invaders. He will be put to the test after the Invaders graduated their top five scorers.

Seniors Shayne Merrifield and Josh Hart are the only players returning with significant experience.

The best of the newcomers could be a freshman, Cayden Merrifield.

West Scranton of five teams in Division 1 of the Lackawanna League last season with a 6-7 record. The Invaders finished 14-12 overall, earning the state tournament berth in a grueling, triple-overtime win over Crestwood in the district semifinals.
