Planutis puts on show in Moses boys win

By TOM ROBINSON, NEPABasketball.com

WILKES-BARRE – Jeff Planutis figured the fans at the 49th annual Dr. George P. Moses Senior All-Star Classic were there to see a show.

He gave them one.

Planutis put on his own personal version of Showtime, hitting all four of his 3-point attempts and adding four dunks, two with extra flair, while scoring 30 points to lead Team Gray/Guido (Black) to a 116-103 victory over Team Toole/Moses (White) at Holy Redeemer High School.

“We knew a lot of people would come to these all-star games,” said Planutis, who helped Hazleton Area to Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 and District 2-4 Class 6A Subregional titles before a 26-win season finally ended in overtime in the state semifinals. “Everybody wants some type of show to be put on.

“We knew, especially from playing at Hazleton, we like to run, gun, find the open man, hit shots, block shots. We just wanted to put on a show for these people.”

Planutis got a big weekend started by earning his team’s Most Valuable Player Award. He hit 13 of 16 shots while playing less than 15 minutes, helping the Black outscore the White, 65-28, during his time on the court.

After the game, he was hitting the road to Emmitsburg, Md. for his first official recruiting visit at Mount St. Mary’s where he potentially could be joining his older brother, Bobby Planutis, on the same National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I team.

The Planutis brothers have played together before at Hazleton Area.

Jeff joined four-year high school teammates, Joey Grula and Josh Samec, in leading the Black to victory.

The Hazleton Area trio took over after Juwane Buckner from Meyers scored on a drive 20 seconds into the second half. Buckner’s basket capped a 30-7 dominance by the White over an eight-minute stretch to take a 63-51 lead.

Samec scored 20 seconds later. When Planutis followed by putting together a double-clutching dunk and 3-pointer on consecutive possessions for the second time in the game, the comeback was on.

Planutis had nine points, Grula had six and Samec had four during the 25-2 run to a 76-65 lead a little more than five minutes into the second half.

Anthony Hawk from GAR, who had the game’s only double-double, led the White back to within, 96-95.

The three Cougars re-entered with 5:04 left and the game was soon decided.

Planutis had eight points and both his teammates also scored in the closing 20-8 run to break the game open for good.

“We weren’t sure who we would play with, but it was awesome playing with those two guys one last time,” Planutis said.

Before heading to Holy Redeemer, Grula lifted Hazleton Area over Coughlin, 76-74, in a WVC Division 1 track meet with a decisive victory in the high jump. He had already won the triple jump and the javelin.

Back on the basketball court, Grula showed off his athletic versatility in more ways, scoring 12 points and grabbing a team-high 9 rebounds.

On a night when defense was often an afterthought for others, Samec blocked five shots, grabbed six of his seven rebounds on the defensive end and added nine points.

Berwick’s Damon Beckhorn hit three 3-pointers while scoring 13 points in the win. Joey Judge, playing on his home court, finished with 10 points, including 7 in the second half.

Chris Gray from Hanover Area and Paul Guido from Holy Redeemer coached the Black team. The team included players from their teams, along with Hazleton Area, Berwick, Tunkhannock and Crestwood.

Pat Toole from Meyers and Pete Moses from Wyoming Area coached the White, which featured their players plus others from GAR, Wyoming Seminary, Dallas, Wyoming Valley West, Pittston Area and MMI Prep.

Draig Ruff from Wyoming Valley West led the team with 17 points, including 11 when it opened a 61-51 halftime lead.

Joey Parsons from Dallas also had 11 points in the first half. He finished with 15 on 7-for-12 shooting and earned team MVP honors.

Buckner finished with 12 points. GAR’s Khalil White had 11 points and 4 assists while teammate Hawk had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Jay Bittner from Dallas scored all 10 of his points in the second half.

Neither team attempted a foul shot in the game.

Pittston Area’s Matt McGlynn edged Samec, 6-5, when the finals of the 3-Point Contest were held at halftime.

Proceeds from the annual games featuring Wyoming Valley Conference seniors benefit local charities, including assisting local families who have needs based on medical issues.
