Joey Verespey scored 15 of his team-high 19 points during a high-scoring fourth quarter Tuesday night to lead the Blue to a 100-99 victory over the Red in the Lackawanna League All-Star Game for senior boys at Valley View High School.
Old Forge’s Verespey and West Scranton’s Shayne Merrifield each hit three 3-pointers during the fourth quarter of a game that featured 30 shots made from beyond the arc.
The Blue outscored the Red, 35-32, in the fourth quarter to rally for the win and had a 16-14 edge in 3-pointers for the game.
Carbondale’s Landon Gabriel coached the Blue team with players from Scranton, Elk Lake, Scranton Prep, West Scranton, Montrose, Mountain View, Old Forge and Susquehanna.
Sean Mangan from Forest City coached the Red team that included players from Holy Cross, Mid Valley, Honesdale, Forest City, North Pocono, Riverside, Delaware Valley, Dunmore and Lackawanna Trail.
Ky’Ron Harbin from Scranton scored 11 points and was selected as team Most Valuable Player for his all-around performance.
Mid Valley’s J.J. Glinsky won the pregame 3-Point Shooting Contest then won MVP honors for the Red. Glinsky led all players in the game with 20 points and six made 3-pointers.
Opposing players selected the two MVPs.
Glinsky hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter that ended in a 19-19 tie, then made two more in the second to help the Red to a 47-44 halftime lead.
Scranton players had a big impact in the win. Robbie McAndrew hit three 3-pointers and had 15 points for the Blue.
Anthony DeGori from Honesdale scored 19 points for the Red. He had nine in the fourth quarter and finished the game with three 3-pointers.
Marcos Ecchevaria from Riverside added 12 points and Joe Thiel from North Pocono 10 in the loss.
Jackson Danzig was selected to play for the Blue, but he was in Hershey helping Abington Heights win a state Class 5A championship and, therefore, unavailable for the all-star game.
